8. Goodbyes

-   Jasper, Hale

The voice had the same sharpness to it, like the edge of a cold steel blade invading my skin, I shuddered from her appearance. “Who are you?”

“Why, don’t you remember me? I’m your old friend!”

Her crimson eyes settled against my chest where the rusted medal hung, her fingers curled like the talons of an eagle. My mind was rushing back, flicking through numerous images until I settled on the photograph: short brown hair, green eyes and born of Mexican descent. “Roxanne, is that you?”

“No!” she screamed, her eyes bulging. “I am Maria!” She ran right up to me and stroked her hand against my face, I caught it but she was stronger and had it flipped around my back before I could react.

She’s delusional, I remembered Maria showing me her little sister that was part of the evacuees that had escaped the city; she had said ‘she has a little problem with her temper and her mind, she’s a little crazy.’ She didn’t leave go of my arm, “I am going to create a bigger newborn army than Maria ever did, and do what she failed to complete,” she hissed like a coiled snake.

I could feel the flow of strength under my skin, my muscles contracting, and my lips pulled back into a snarl, malice lacing my face. I would never go back to my old lifestyle, “You are not Maria, Roxanne, and you can do better? Didn’t she hurt you by leaving you to that care home?”

Her little oval shaped face suddenly hung limply, “I will never forget the day she left me there, but now I understood why she did.” She slapped her head childishly, “Newborns, why didn’t I think of that?”

“When did Maria turn you?”

Her brow furrowed and she twisted my arm further around my back, I felt the pain coarse through my body like poison. “A few months before you killed her,” she screeched. “Now, our little family has been waiting for a reunion for a while now. Let’s go!”

She released me, my legs started to move, the muscle’s tugging me away from the house. Something hammered against my brain, my mental defences shattering into thousands of pieces, each one mirrored my horror. She has a gift!

Roxanne giggled, her voice high-pitched, “My gift was quite a strange one,” she chimed away happily as she pranced along the wasteland, “Maria said it was unique, she was the one to help me master it.”

My emotional manipulation wasn’t a talent I could use at this point, her feelings were in turmoil. One minute ridiculously silly and feminine and the next evil and scheming like her sister. With her mental problems, I wouldn’t be able to help the poor creature. “What is your talent, child?”

“DON’T CALL ME A CHILD!” she cried furiously. Sighing; her tone settled to an octave lower than usual, soft and shrill like a baby, “My talent is that I can make people do what I want, and I can make their bodies twist in pain or walk away free if I wanted.” Sounds like Jane’s other long lost twin, I mocked sarcastically.

Roxanne’s blood red eyes supported her rage, her fingers clicked and every inch of me burst into  flames, like I was combusting, her high cries of joy and happiness where faded into the distance. “Don’t you mock me, Jasper Hale,” she screamed.

A cable snapped inside me and I was on the grounds, my palms face down and my head buried into my chest, “How do you know my name?” I panted breathlessly.

“Newborns can come in handy for spying.”

My heart throbbed, Alice! They would be watching her, and if I didn’t go they could kill her, then my life would end. I would nothing to go back to, my heart would be truly hallow and empty. I cradled my last memory of her dancing around the room, her pixie styled hair fluttering in the slight breeze, and it would be all I have of her. What if she came after me, no! I would have to stop her from following me.

Roxanne was occupied watching an ant hill nearby, but I could still feel her presence against my brain, for once I would be so grateful for Bella’s mental shield. In a large boulder I carved a few last words of goodbye with an angular stone; she would find this, I knew she would follow my scent. Forgive me, I wrote last, hopefully she would understand the lengths I’d do to protect her.

Roxanna carried on, my legs dragging me onwards; I could still hear the faint tinge of Alice’s laughter in the breeze. I love you so much, I whispered to myself.

-   Alice, Cullen

“It’s been a week and Jasper still isn’t back from Texas, I’m worried about him Carlisle. He never takes this long,” I struggled to release my emotions, everything was out of control. Jasper was my balance, like a pair of scales – he kept everything right.

A shuffle in the kitchen, Seth and Jacob appeared from the doorway. “Hey shortie, what’s up?” he answered back with his mouth full of Esme’s food.

Edward replied; I couldn’t open my mouth to explain anything. “Jasper’s went to Texas a week ago, he hasn’t returned. Alice –” he stressed the word bring Jacob to grin since he had grown accustomed to calling me ‘shortie’ –“is worried about him. She wants to go to Texas, Bella with her.”

“Bella?” he asked full of disbelief. Sitting by the piano with Renesmee, whose was practicing Esme’s favorite, Bella shrugged, “Alice might need protection and I’m the only shield around here, I don’t want to leave my sister unprotected against whatever is out there.”

We had agreed not to share the specifics, we knew together that Jasper was in danger and Bella has agreed to come. Of course we had put up safe guards to ensure Edward didn’t find out, now he was agreeing but still worrying. “I would to go with them but there refusing, what do you think Carlisle?”

There were a few silent seconds before an answer escaped his mouth, “Let them go?”

Edward’s face was creased with worry, I could tell he was reading Carlisle’s mind. You really should let me come, but if you’s want to go alone make sure you are safe, his voice cut off in my head and he smiled towards me.

“We will leave soon.”

Everyone nodded, me and Bella departed upstairs, we walked into mine and Jasper’s shared bedroom and collected our bags. “Do you think they suspected anything,” she whispered in a low voice.

“Let’s hope they didn’t.”

It wasn’t long before we had all said our goodbyes and were racing towards the airport, the flight was short – Bella with her head back on the seat while I searched for any sign of Jasper amongst the future, nothing! When we landed the Porsche was already in place and we were meandering through the landscape at top speeds. I would find Jasper, if it was the last thing I do!

4. Visitors (Part Two)

-    Alice, Cullen

Within an instant everything was in disarray, the wolves – Leah and Seth – were snapping their jaws; Jacob bowed in front of Renesmee, a snarl ripping from between his teeth, Bella had thrown up her shield – her mind concentrating on her dearest family, all of us had gracefully slid into crouches, all except Carlisle who stood tall and proud in front of his coven.

The Romanian vampires were ready to stalk their prey, they were the hunters – Marcus and Caroline the helpless victims.

At the fringes of the forest I could the faces of some of the wolves; they had obviously smelt the vampires and come to search, Sam, who was jet black, snarled a command and watched in hesitation.

“How dare you invite them here, after what they were doing to do to your demon half-blood child,” Vladimir sneered uncontrollably. Edward took a step forward as Bella extended her shield, both of them feeling the same boiling rage over the comment.

“We didn’t invite them, they appeared,” I answered. “I had a vision.”

Stefan raised an eyebrow. “So the pixie has a vision that these leeches” – Jacob grimaced at the use of his vocabulary being using by a ‘leech’ themselves, he let out a wolfy grin towards Bella who smiled. She understood. “-And you instantly turn against us, how do you know they’re not going to ambush you!”

“We know the truth; my son, Edward, has proved that,” Carlisle replied calmly.

They roared in laughter, “First the vision girl and now the mind-reader, don’t you see their here to deceive – they killed our people!”

Marcus had just been standing like a marble statue on the grass, Caroline was shuffling around, but then he was instantly in action. He snapped his head up, eyes firmly planted on Stefan and Vladimir and then in an instant reflex had his teeth bared at their necks. It was so fast, even for my own eyes and it was impossible to describe on the spot. “That was your own doing,” Marcus cried venomously.

The vampire’s detached themselves in a few quick fluid movements; running around each other they took turns to aim a quick shot – aiming for the neck. Bella had once described this technique as if it was a dance, and she was right. It was beautifully choreographed; each move like it was an extension of the other: a duck, a flip over the back, a strike to the neck.

There was a flare of passion towards this dance, the wolves watched intently – properly gaining more moves I joked quietly to myself – for myself it reminded me of meeting Jasper. All that emotion and infatuation enveloping us in sparks when we first met, I caught his eye watching me as I thought of us. He embraced me, whispering in my ear quietly. This is a great time to think about romance. Renesmee was quietly watching the demonstration of power from behind myself, her red curls flapping around her heart shaped face delicately. I stepped aside as she took a step forward, I clasped her hand – I could hear Bella sigh with relief.

A few moments later, the battle continued. We started to become unaware of everything around us, Bella letting down her shield to regain her mental awareness, the fight was becoming one of those endless arguments humans had. There was shrill cry a few centimetres away, “Renesmee, no!”

The small child was running towards Caroline, the female vampire who stood paralyzed to the spot. I ran towards her, Edward behind my heels – his face creased with worry. Bella I knew was too mentally weak to contain her shield, so it couldn’t put it up to protect her child. Renesmee reached Caroline and begged to be up, her eyes coal black she picked up the hybrid child – she gasped and instantly went rigid, her body trembling from fear.

We finally reached her and Edward pulled her away, her arms finding his neck where her head was cradled. “What did she show you?” I breathed.

“It was the fight, it was like I was watching it over-and-over again! What did she do to me?”

“That’s her gift, she can project images.”

Her body was still shivering; Bella was just behind me, her voice soon soothing my adoptive niece. “Why was she showing me the fight?”

Renesmee flashed her gleaming teeth and spoke to the female vampire, her heart lurching when she could hear words flowing from the child’s lips. “I want you to stop it,” she said eagerly. With that Bella and Edward took the small struggling child back to the protection of her family, I remained with Caroline. I could feel Jaspers eyes burning a hole into my back, he was worried, I flashed a glance back.

“What did she mean? I can’t stop it,” she cried desperately. “I only wanted to get away from those murderers and start a new life.”

“You can,” I placed a hand on her shoulder and nodded towards the forest. She knew what I meant, and I danced happily back to Jaspers side. Caroline stood rooted to the spot.

It was a while before she moved, edging closer towards to the fringes of the forest – Jacob had told Sam to let the vampire through and she would cause no harm. She came closer to the group of fighting vampires as she gained more confidence, just as Renesmee was pointing towards the gang of wolfs in the tree’s the fighting ceased. Marcus had his teeth bared against Vladimir’s throat, but his eyes weren’t searching for oncoming death but bearing into Caroline’s who was stationary, her voice rung loud in the clearing after a moment of silence, “Stop.”

Marcus pulled himself away from the strolling vampires, Stefan regained his balance and his coven member was next to Caroline, their fingers intertwined. I think he’s her soul-mate, like Jasper is mine.

I thought she already had a husband, Edward silently communicated to me through minds.

Maybe he wasn’t the right one, but look at how there staring at each other. It’s similar to how you look at Bella, me to Jasper, Carlisle to Esme, Rosalie to Emmett – even Renesmee and Jacob at times.

Edward growled; he didn’t like discussing Jacob’s imprint with his daughter.

Stefan was now talking with his fellow coven member, we could all hear. “We should finish the fight now, he’s weak Vladimir. We could finally get out revenge.”

They smiled, teeth exposed. They were now stalking Marcus, a few steps behind him.

“Stop!” Caroline shouted again and ran up in front of them.

“No,” Stefan snarled, “The Volturi killed out coven and destroyed our home. He deserves to die.”

She placed a hand on her hip, a childish gesture. “I know what it’s like to lost everything to them, they killed my husband and were about to end my life as well. However, he,” she pointed to Marcus. “He saved my life, so I owe him.”

Vladimir interrupted Stefan before he could talk, “She’s right.”

With Stefan silenced they strode away, fury lining his brother’s face. Caroline caught up with them once again, when will this end, I cried tiredly to myself.

“I want to join your group.”

“No!”

“I want to get the Volturi back as much as you, I only owed him and now it’s done. Let me join?”

We were all stood by now, waiting for the end. We were never even needed, Marcus wasn’t a threat. My vision had given us a false fear; we thought Renesmee was in danger again but it turns out it was only Marcus to himself and the Romanian coven. I suppressed a giggle as I leaned into Jaspers shoulder; it felt like everything was being taken off my shoulders.

The Romanian group were all now disappearing into the woods, Vladimir holding Caroline’s hand, Stefan walking away shrugging his shoulders. It was long hour before Marcus could say a word, “I will return to my brothers,” he said plainly. “But since what I have noticed with my female companion and the rouge vampire Vladimir, I will never kill another human in my lifetime.”

He left, I knew what he said was genuine because I had a vision later in that week of Marcus keeping to his vegetarian diet, and it was all in spite of his love for his wife. Love can do crazy things.
